Modern scholars disagree about the precise nature of the sin that provoked God’s wrath in Genesis 19. Some isolate the aggressors’ inhospitality to the exclusion of any potential sexual deviance and allege that the traditional emphasis on fornication, especially homosexual intercourse, is a historically recent phenomenon. This lesson critiques this assertion by demonstrating that there is a tradition in Second Temple Judaism and the primitive church attributing sexual sins, including homosexuality, to Sodom and its neighbors.
